PDF Flashcards: Turn Any Document Into Study Cards with AI

PDF flashcards are question-and-answer cards made from a PDF's text to help you review key concepts. With StudyBuddy, upload a PDF to generate flashcards, multiple-choice quizzes, and exam-mode practice from the same document.

Lecture slides, textbook chapters, manuals, and other PDFs, including scanned ones, can be used as study material. A free account supports documents of any size, with larger uploads split into sections for processing.

How to make flashcards from a PDF

  1. Upload your document. StudyBuddy accepts PDF (including scanned ones), Word, PowerPoint and plain text files, photos of your notes, and YouTube videos with captions. Scanned pages and photos are read automatically; that takes a little longer than usual.
  2. Review the generated study material. The upload can produce a flashcard deck, multiple-choice questions, and exam-mode practice. Processing takes a few minutes for most documents.
  3. Choose a study mode. Review cards to memorize terms, use quiz questions to test recall, or try exam mode for timed practice.

For example, a chapter defining terms and explaining a process can produce cards that ask for each term's meaning, plus quiz questions about how the process works. Check generated cards against the source, especially when the document has complex notation or scanned pages.

What happens when you upload a PDF

StudyBuddy reads the document and uses its content to create questions and answers around concepts such as definitions, relationships, formulas, key facts, and named processes. The same upload can also generate multiple-choice practice and exam-format questions.

Uploads above 50,000 characters, approximately 20 pages, are split into parts and processed separately. Each part has its own study material and progress tracking, so sections of a long textbook or review manual remain distinct. Parts use credits independently, from 1 to 3 credits depending on size, and count toward the active document limit for the plan.

This section-by-section approach is useful when a course file contains several chapters. Uploading a long document does not create one combined deck by default; its sections are handled as separate documents.

Study with flashcards, quizzes, or exam mode

Flashcards support quick recall of terms, definitions, and formulas. Each card is marked Known or Still Learning. Known cards leave the rotation, while Still Learning cards continue to appear until you master them. You can reset the deck to review all cards again before an exam.

Multiple-choice practice is a separate mode. When you choose a wrong answer, StudyBuddy provides a rationale for that specific option and explains the factual correction. This helps identify whether a mistake came from confusing two terms or misunderstanding a relationship.

MCQ practice also adapts to performance: topics can return before they are forgotten, question difficulty can rise as you improve, and topics can be mixed during practice. Exam mode offers timed test simulations. These modes use the same uploaded source, but serve different study tasks.

StudyBuddy compared with other PDF flashcard workflows

OptionWhat the workflow supportsConsider it when
StudyBuddyPDF-to-flashcard generation, MCQ quizzes with feedback on wrong options, and exam-mode practice from the same upload. MCQ practice adapts to performance. You want several study modes based on one document.
RemNote or ScholarlyFlashcards with a note-taking workflow. You already use notes and want cards within that routine.
QuizletA flashcard platform with AI generation. You already use the platform and primarily need flashcards.

The right option depends on how you study after generating the cards. A flashcard-centered tool may fit a notes-based routine. StudyBuddy keeps card review alongside quiz questions and timed practice, using the same source document.

PDF flashcards for different study needs

Medical and pre-medical study: Upload lecture slides or textbook sections to review terminology and definitions. Use MCQs for application questions, including clinical vignettes where they are generated from the material.

Undergraduate courses: Make a deck from lecture slides or a chapter before a midterm or final. Use the cards for recall, then switch to quizzes to check understanding beyond memorized definitions.

Graduate study and certifications: Process research papers, certification manuals, or regulatory documents in sections. Separate document tracking helps keep progress for one subject from blending with another.

Language learning: Upload vocabulary lists, grammar guides, or reading passages. StudyBuddy detects the document's language and generates cards and quiz material in that language. A bilingual source can also support matched vocabulary cards, such as Spanish-English terms.

PDF file quality and supported formats

StudyBuddy accepts PDFs, Word documents (.docx), PowerPoint presentations (.pptx), plain text, and photos of your notes (JPG, PNG or HEIC). With a free account you can also import a YouTube video that has captions. Text-selectable PDFs are read directly.

A scanned PDF stores page content as images. StudyBuddy detects it and reads those pages automatically, so you don't need to run OCR first; reading them takes a little longer than usual. For handwritten notes, accuracy depends on how clear the handwriting is. Check the generated material against the source when a page is hard to read.

Free plan, guest mode, and document limits

A free account includes 5 processing credits per month; each new document uses 1 to 3, depending on its length. After a document has been processed, study sessions on it are unlimited. Guest mode gives you 3 processing credits to try it without signing up.

StudyBuddy splits documents above 50,000 characters into separate parts. Each part uses credits independently, from 1 to 3 depending on size, and takes a slot in the plan's active document limit. Guests are limited to 50,000 characters; creating a free account supports uploads of any size.

Pro costs 8.99 USD per month, or 89.90 USD per year, with 50 credits per month. Pro includes unlimited use of Sabi, the AI tutor.
